Why a Mascot Search?

Brief History
Since the school’s early beginnings in 1955, Providence High School has honored the Pioneer spirit, which has been rooted in the heritage of the Sisters of Providence, and manifested visually through various mascots and symbols. Our earliest imagery featured the Pioneer Covered Wagon, and for a time, a “Davey Crockett”-style Pioneer. In the early 2000s, after the Student Activity Center was built, the wild west imagery faded from campus. Today, our Pioneer identity, while still rooted in the legacy of the Sisters of Providence, needs a fresh new look.

Why does a mascot matter?
Mascots are more than symbols—they unite us, inspire school spirit, and reflect our shared values. Now, we want your input to help shape the next chapter of our Pioneer story.

What should a Pioneer look like?

Historically, Providence High School used “Wild West” imagery—such as covered wagons and frontier settlers up until the turn of the century in 2000 in rallies, posters, and apparel items. That imagery was retired because it does not accurately represent our values and can be culturally insensitive. We want to move away from those stereotypes entirely.

Our understanding of “Pioneer” has always been rooted in the courage and vision of the Sisters of Providence, who founded our school and paved the way for generations of students. They were true pioneers in education and service—innovators who shaped the future through faith and commitment. However, we will not use nun imagery as part of the mascot design. While we deeply honor their legacy, depicting them as a mascot could be considered disrespectful and diminish the sacredness of their role.

We want a mascot that inspires school spirit and reflects our shared values today. This is where we need your help shaping the look of our next visual identity of the Pioneers!
