A Message from the Dean of Curriculum
Here at Providence, we fully embrace our designation of Pioneers as part of our Legacy from the Sisters of Providence. Those courageous women ventured across thousands of miles, persevering through countless obstacles and hardships, compelled to respond to the signs of the times in service to their fellow man. We hope to instill a similar sense of purpose, courage, and resilience in our Pioneer students.
We want our Pioneers to see their education as a journey they are on as they become who it is they are meant to be. We want students to seek out new experiences and challenges in order to learn who they are, what inspires them, and how they can use their gifts in meaningful ways. High school is about more than an impressive transcript with a strong GPA. Therefore, our academic program is designed not only to exceed UC, Cal State, and private colleges’ admissions requirements, but also to prompt students to greater depths of self-reflection, critical thinking, analysis, and synthesis of information.
As the Dean of Studies, it is my great privilege to work with the faculty to continually enhance the quality of the curriculum & instruction here at Providence High School. Together, we developed an interdisciplinary approach to the study of humanities that weaves Visual Arts, Religious Studies, and reflection on Christian Service into the academic curriculum of English and Social Studies. By framing the curriculum of these subjects under shared themes and compelling questions, our students understand the interconnectivity of ideas and disciplines rather than seeing them as separate and distinct. In this way, our Pioneers gain a broader view of the academic landscape, which orients them to the world around them with more personal and real-world relevance.
That metaphor of the Pioneer carries over into every aspect of what we do. The skills, knowledge, and values our students take from Providence serves as their compass. We do not chart the path for them, we merely equip our Pioneers with the intellectual passport they need to continue exploring new horizons.
