Humanities

Rooted in values, inspired by humanity

The Humanities Department is dedicated to cultivating minds and hearts through the lens of our values: excellence, compassion, justice, dignity, and integrity. We believe that the study of English, Social Studies, Religion and World Languages is not only an academic pursuit but a moral and spiritual journey that shapes students into thoughtful, ethical, and engaged citizens.

Through the Humanities, we prepare students not only for college and career, but for a life of purpose, service, and faith-filled leadership.

Department Overview

The Humanities Department brings together four distinct interconnected disciplines—English, Religious Studies, Social Studies, and World Languages—to provide students with a rich and holistic understanding of the human experience. Each discipline contributes uniquely to the development of critical thinking, ethical reflection, cultural awareness, and articulate communication.

Teacher and students in classroom
English

English empowers students to explore literature, language, writing and reading as tools for self-expression, empathy, and intellectual discovery and to engage with diverse voices and develop the skills to communicate with clarity and purpose.

Religious Studies

Religious Studies invites students to deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith, explore theological questions, and reflect on their spiritual journey. Grounded in the principles of social teaching, this discipline fosters moral reasoning, compassion, and commitment to service.

"The Humanities Department has been a very positive experience for me. The work we do never feels like busy work because it always has meaning and is engaging. I have learned so much. Our teachers have always been amazing. They are not only great at explaining the material, but they also demonstrate how much they care for their students and the subject they are teaching." —Stephen Dutka '27

Brandon Edelstein '27

"A positive experience I have had from my classes in the Humanities department is learning about the complexities of the world and how to apply the various things we learn to real-life practices for the benefit of our community and the future."—Brandon Edelstein '27

Emilia Vargas '26

"Growing up with a multi-religious background, I’ve always had a complicated relationship with faith. At Providence, however, it has become a true learning experience. Over the past four years, religion classes (through both the teachers and the curriculum) have given me the chance to explore different beliefs and the history of Catholicism and other world religions. I’ve seen how religions can intersect and diverge, which hasn’t clouded my personal beliefs but instead transformed religion into a kind of history class: an opportunity to learn more, to dive deeper, and to better understand the meaning and past of multiple traditions. I’ve always found religion to be an engaging subject—one that feels increasingly relevant in today’s world—but in a time when opinions are often pushed onto one another, and political correctness dominates, it has always been a safe space for me to ask questions and wonder why some things are the way they are."—Emilia Vargas '26

From Department Faculty

At Providence High School, we believe teaching is a calling and a joy. Our faculty bring passion and purpose to every lesson, guiding students to think critically, care deeply, and connect meaningfully with the world around them in and outside the classroom.

A group of students are seated at desks in a classroom, engaged in various activities such as studying and using computers, while a person stands in the front of the room, likely addressing the class.
Karissa Caperina, English

"It is a privilege to share literature that excites us. Literature enables students to cultivate their unique perspectives and allows them to experience perspectives beyond their own."

Maribel Kuklish, World Languages

"Watching our students thrive—in the classroom and beyond—is the most rewarding part of teaching.”
