Our Cinema Arts program is designed to enrich the overall college preparatory education that every Providence student receives. We know our students and we know that our students in this program will assume leadership roles in the media industry in the future. With this in mind, Cinema Arts students are held to the highest artistic excellence and creative integrity standards.

The Curriculum

9th Grade

9th Grade Course

Introduction to Cinema Arts
This course delves into the practical and aesthetic contexts of cinema, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the art form. Through a combination of hands-on filmmaking assignments and film studies, students will develop a deeper appreciation for cinema arts.

Key Experiences

Produce a Short Film
From immersive technical workshops to the creation of a 3-5 minute short film, students explore a wide range of media production techniques.

Editing Basics
Students receive instruction on editing using our Adobe Premiere editing workstations.

Camera Equipment Introduction
Students are introduced to the fundamentals of camera equipment through workshops and hands-on lessons.

Student Film Showcase
Students create short films to be considered in the end-of-year Cinema Arts Program Showcase.

10th Grade

10th Grade Course

Moving Image Art & Production
This course is an introduction to the artistry and visual language of filmmaking. Through the medium of video and film production, students learn to appreciate cinema as an art form and a method for expressing both the personal and professional craft of filmmaking.

Key Experiences

Filmmaking at All Stages
Students learn various aspects of script writing, pre-production, production, and postproduction.

Hands-On Lessons
Students experience hands-on lessons in cinematography; cinematic design and the technical skills required to shoot and edit short films.

Complete Creative Works
By the end of this course, students will submit several creative works and explore the basic techniques in the world of cinema, beginning to create their portfolios.

11th Grade

11th Grade Courses

Media Ethics: Framework, Application & Films
As they enter their upperclassmen years, students focus on more advanced production and storytelling. Students use filmmaking as a tool to investigate modern life in American and international culture and explore different philosophical frameworks for ethical analysis.

Advanced Video Production I: Film Analysis
Students experience, firsthand, what it is like to collaborate on a video project. Teams are given three project assignments during the semester with specific deadlines to meet. This is a production-based class where the students will develop and employ the necessary skills that simulate the demands of the media industry.

Introduction to Film & Media (Elective)
In this elective, through a variety of practical and creative video assignments and media studies, students will have the opportunity to explore the world of visual storytelling and the broad scope of the entertainment industry.

Key Experience

Deeper Equipment Understanding & Mastery
Students will hone their mastery of fundamental principles of video production, including basic shots, Lighting, Microphone and Audio Recording techniques, Scriptwriting, and Technical Editing.

Student Film Showcase
Students create short films to be considered in the end-of-year Cinema Arts Program Showcase.

12th Grade

12th Grade Courses

Writing for TV & Film (Honors)
This dynamic filmmaking course focuses on advancing students' creative writing and production skills. Students hone their storytelling abilities and gain practical experience in the art of screenwriting, setting them on a path towards producing compelling cinematic narratives.

Advanced Video Production II: Directing for TV & Film
This production and writing orientated course emphasize the skills learned throughout the Cinema Arts Programs. This class further explores contemporary and creative ways to craft short films.

Key Experiences

Beat Sheets & Screenplay Page Openings
With a strong emphasis on screenwriting techniques, students will learn to create a full beat sheet and craft the opening ten pages of a feature film screenplay.

Film School Application Preparation
Students continue to practice advanced editing using our Adobe Premiere systems to create a short film for the supplemental material portion of their college application.

Develop Your Personal Voice
In students' senior year, a special emphasis is placed on the development of stories based on personal emotional obstacles and/or life experiences they have experienced and overcome.

Student Film Showcase
Students coordinate and plan their end of year student film showcase, featuring student works across all grade levels in the Cinema Arts Program.
