Providence's Performing Arts department engages students in a rigorous curriculum, focusing on both theory and practical application, and as a part of the larger Providence High School community which was founded on the principle of educating the whole human being, benefitting from a rich and robust academic and spiritual environment. Led by a team of highly qualified educators who are working professional artists themselves, Providence High Artists enjoy a vast network of resources widening their opportunity for success at every stage—high school, college and beyond.

With artists studying at top tier colleges and universities including, USC, Chapman University, The New School, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, New York University: Tisch School of the Arts, Boston Conservatory and Philadelphia’s UArts, and making an impact on the world as professionals, the lessons learned while engaged at Providence High Arts provide a lifetime of return.

Dance I

This course is an engaging introduction to the world of dance, fostering an appreciation of diverse dance genres and foundational techniques while developing skills necessary for both public performance and personal artistic expression. Students explore dance as a powerful form of storytelling, creativity, and communication.

Key Experiences

Exploration of Dance Genres
Students study and practice a variety of dance styles, including ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern, contemporary, and musical theatre, while also engaging in student-created choreography.

Technique, Anatomy, and Movement
Through focused instruction, students gain a basic understanding of anatomy, proper placement and alignment, and key muscle groups used in technically challenging choreography, supporting healthy and effective movement practices.

Creative Expression & Performance
With a holistic approach to the student as both artist and choreographer, students analyze major works by influential choreographers and companies, explore dance history, and produce original works that culminate in performance opportunities—developing a lifelong love of movement.

Drama & Classical Acting

Drama I & Classical Acting

Drama I and Classical Acting courses develop an appreciation and foundational knowledge of acting techniques for the novice performer while continuing to challenge and inspire the more experienced actor. Both courses emphasize strengthening the body and voice as essential instruments for emotional expression, presence, and performance.

Key Experiences

Foundations of Acting & Ensemble Work
Drama I introduces students to core elements of theatre, including ensemble collaboration, introductory acting techniques, script analysis, and the creation of original work, with a strong emphasis on bringing authenticity and self-awareness to character development.

Advanced Technique & Character Development
Classical Acting builds upon these foundations through the exploration of varied acting techniques, advanced material, theatre history, and the collaborative roles of the writer, director, and designer. Students engage in deep character work through self-exploration, transformation, and disciplined rehearsal.

Performance & Artistic Growth
Both courses provide meaningful performance opportunities, encouraging students to apply their skills in live theatrical settings while cultivating confidence, creative risk-taking, and a deeper understanding of the actor’s craft.

Musical Ensembles

Music Ensembles are designed to support and develop each student’s individual musical strengths while fostering collaboration, discipline, and artistic excellence. Through choral and instrumental performance, students deepen their understanding of music as both a personal and collective expressive art form.

Key Experiences

Musical Skill Development
Students expand their knowledge and application of music theory, music history, sight‑reading techniques, vocal and instrumental skills, and expressive performance practices.

Collaboration & Discipline
Each ensemble emphasizes self‑discipline, responsibility, and commitment, encouraging students to work together toward shared artistic goals while cultivating respect for choral and instrumental traditions.

Performance & Artistic Excellence
All ensembles offer regular performance opportunities, with many participating in regional and national competitions and festivals throughout the academic year, allowing students to apply their skills in authentic, professional‑style settings.
