Application Process

Step 1: Complete Online Application

Select the Apply button above to begin your child’s online application. Providence High School uses Finalsite Enrollment as its admissions software. All inquiries, applications, and event registrations will go through this system.

Once you have submitted your initial application, you will be able to manage all your application materials on the Finalsite Enrollment in the Admissions Checklist.

Step 2: Submit Application and Application Fee

Providence High School requires two letters of recommendation as part of the application process:

Current English Teacher Recommendation
Current Math Teacher Recommendation

Once you have submitted your child’s application and paid the $100 application fee, you will have access to your application checklist within the Finalsite Enrollment system. Each required teacher recommendation will have its own item on that checklist. You will be asked to input recommender information and can send the form links directly from the checklist. You will also be able to check the status of recommendations on your application checklist at any time.

Recommendations are due on January 24, 2025.

Note on Additional Letters of Recommendation

We understand that other teachers in your child’s life likely know them well. While the 8th grade English and Math teacher recommendations are required and must be submitted via the Finalsite Enrollment system described above, we will accept up to two additional letters of recommendation as supplementary materials. These recommendations will most likely come from your child’s 7th-grade teachers. They are not required, and not submitting one does not affect your child’s application. We simply want to allow you the opportunity to submit them.

To invite a teacher to submit an additional letter of recommendation, ask them to email a PDF version of the letter directly to admissions@providencehigh.org.

A PHS Admissions Office staff member will add it to your child’s online application materials.

Important: Please do not enter 7th grade teacher information into the application checklist itself. That information is reserved for your child's 8th grade teachers. Please reach out to us if you have any questions.

Step 4: Schedule Interviews

Once you submit your child’s application, you will be contacted to schedule an on-campus interview. At Providence, admissions interviews include both students and parents/guardians. Interviewers will meet with the student first and then separately with parents/guardians.

Detailed information will be sent to you a few days ahead of your scheduled family interview.

Step 5: Request Transcripts from Current School

Once you complete the online application and pay the $100 application fee in Finalsite Enrollment, a transcript request will appear as an item in your child’s application checklist. You will be able to send a request to your child’s current school directly through the checklist.

Once it is received, a green checkmark will appear next to the checklist item.

Important Note: By sending the request via the admissions checklist, you are authorizing your child’s current school to release their records to Providence High School.

Step 6: Await Admissions Decision

no Standardized Entrance Exams

As of 2020, Providence High School does not accept results of any standardized entrance exam. We ask that you do not submit your child’s scores as part of their application.

Interested in applying to one of our specialized cohort programs? Within the application, you will be required to indicate whether you will also be applying to one of our programs. If you choose to apply to one, your application checklist will be updated to include an item that indicates the additional materials you must submit. Submissions are also due on or before January 26, 2024.

What does Providence High School look for in a student?

How are admission decisions made?

Do you require or accept entrance exam results for tests such as the HSPT or ISEE?

How important are teacher recommendations?

Input from your child’s current teachers is an important part of the application. Our confidential, online recommendation forms give teachers the opportunity to provide valuable information about a student’s academic strengths and challenges as well as the many other characteristics that will help them succeed at Providence. The forms are specifically designed to help teachers focus on the most important aspects of an applicant, many of which go beyond academic skills and achievement.

How important are the short-answer and essay questions in the online application?

These sections of our online application offer students the opportunity to tell the Admissions Committee about their interests, passions, and accomplishments. We highly encourage students (and parents/guardians in questions directed at them) to take the time to think deeply and provide thorough responses. Students should view these as opportunities to help us get to know them.

Is an interview required? What is the format?

Yes. All students applying to Providence must take part in an on-campus interview.

Interviews are meant for both students and parents/guardians. First, the interviewer will meet with the student and then meet separately with parents/guardians. The interview is a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know your family and for you to ask questions and get to know Providence better.

Do you offer financial assistance and/or scholarships?

Providence offers need-based financial assistance to qualifying families who have completed the separate financial assistance application by the listed deadline. For more information, please visit our Financial Assistance page.

In lieu of scholarships, Providence does offer merit awards, which are based on a student’s entire application. All students are eligible to receive a merit award, and no additional materials are required. For more information, please visit our Merit Award page.

How do I visit campus?

We offer a number of admissions events throughout the year that offer families the opportunity to visit our campus. For a comprehensive and interactive look at our school, we recommend taking a campus tour. Tours are given on most Tuesdays and Thursdays starting in September through January and cover all aspects of our school. To register for a campus tour, please visit our Tours & Events page.

Do you accept international students?

Providence High School does accept a small number of international students. Please be aware that we do not provide or facilitate housing. International students applying to Providence must be planning to live locally with parents or legal guardians.

Please note that we do not work with international placement agencies. All communication must be between parents/guardians and our office.

International students are encouraged to apply through our International Students page.

Do you offer Student Shadow Days?

What are Providence High School Focus Programs? What is the application process? Do I need to apply to a Focus Program?

Providence offers specialized Focus Programs in Cinema Arts, Medical, and Technology. These programs are opportunities for students who have a particular interest in and commitment to one of those areas. All are four-year programs and have additional requirements in addition to the PHS academic curriculum. If you are interested in applying to one of the three programs, you can make that choice in the online application. Additional materials will need to be submitted, and those are outlined in the online application itself.

Please note that you do not need to apply to a focus program. Approximately 50% of Providence High School students are enrolled in Focus Programs.
