CAIS Statement on Gun Violence and Safety 2018

Dear Providence Community,
I want to alert you to the fact that as Head of School at Providence High School, I have joined many school heads in California in signing the attached statement that will be published in the LA Times and SF Chronicle on Sunday (March 11, 2018). The New York area Heads of Schools published a similar letter in the NY Times a few weeks ago. The careful and important process of considering my support was taken with council and feedback from CAIS leadership, their legal council, and conversation with our Board of Regents Chair, Stuart Posin.
I wish to impress on everyone that the intention of this statement is toward improving school safety and decreasing gun violence and not to debate political issues such as gun control.
We believe that our students and adults at school should feel safe and the nation needs to explore and act on measures that will improve the chances of that being the case for all.
I have also attached a link from the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) expressing a position supporting our school initiatives to contribute to change and education on these same topics.
In Providence,

Joe Sciuto
Head of School
