Summer Reading

One School, One Story
Providence High School's ONE SCHOOL, ONE STORY is a program we started in the 2017-18 school year whereby community members submit suggestions for books or podcasts for the entire school to read together over the summer.  That initial list is then reviewed & reduced by a committee of students and Department Heads to become the "Sweet 16 Summer Reading Bracket" that we learn about and the entire community of students, faculty, and staff vote on as the competition thins.  By April, we have a winner. 
The goals of this school-wide initiative are to:
  • increase student engagement by emphasizing student voice and choice
  • develop opportunities for interdisciplinary learning in and outside the classroom
  • cultivate opportunities for larger community-wide conversations on relevant topics and issues
  • enhance our already strong sense of community by providing a way for students to connect with their peers, teachers, and staff
  • set students up for success in their next academic year by honing essential cross-curricular skills of empathy, critical reading, and textual analysis  
 
ASSIGNMENT: Please download the two (2) documents below for instructions on how to annotate and reflect on this year's summer reading: Turtles All The Way Down by John Green. All students are required to complete the summer reading.  Teachers will use these texts starting the very first day of class, so be ready to write about what you have read over the summer. 

AP-Level English Courses
 
AP-Level English courses require an additional novel to be read in the summer. In addition to the One School, One Story novel, our Advanced Placement students will also read:
11th Grade AP Language & Composition - Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

12th Grade AP Literature & Composition - Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
