Building a Computer from the Ground Up

Building a Computer from the Ground Up

Students in the Information Technology & Cybersecurity course are exploring the foundational principles of computers, information technology, networking, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. So far, students have focused on the fundamentals of computers and the field of information technology, learning about computer architecture, hardware components, and how computers process information. To apply their learning, students recently completed their first hands-on lab challenge: assembling a PC without the use of a manual. Relying solely on the knowledge gained from their initial lessons, students worked collaboratively to identify components, solve problems, and successfully build a functioning computer. The activity reinforced key concepts covered in class while encouraging critical thinking, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving skills.

Students in Game & App Design are developing the foundational skills they will use for their first major project by gaining hands-on experience with Unity and C#, creating a series of mini-games and prototypes that help bring their ideas to life through coding, movement, and player interaction. Their first project this semester is a classic-style 2D platformer inspired by games such as Super Mario.

Students in Principles of Engineering are challenged to apply the engineering design process to solve real-world problems in the fields of mechanical engineering, robotics, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and product design and development. Their first design challenge required them to construct shoes made from newspaper using specified materials, criteria, and constraints.
