Learning from the Pros

Learning from the Pros

Our juniors had the opportunity to learn from documentary producer Amanda Spain, who visited Providence to discuss her work in nonfiction storytelling. After exploring examples of her short-form content and viewing the trailer for her current film, Hanging From A Wire, students gained valuable insights into the documentary filmmaking process and the power of storytelling through film.

Sophomore Cinema Arts Program students welcomed camera and steadicam operator Colin Hudson to class for an in-depth look at the tools and techniques used to create dynamic cinematic shots. Drawing on his industry experience, Hudson showcased professional-level steadicam rigs and guided students through an analysis of a scene from the movie, Shang-Chi, exploring how camera movement helps shape visual storytelling. After learning from a working industry professional, students put their new knowledge into practice by operating rigs and gimbals themselves. These hands-on experiences are helping students develop the skills needed to create visually compelling shots while gaining a deeper understanding of the techniques used in professional film production.
