Providence Spring Sports Update

Spring sports at Providence brought growth, grit, and plenty of highlight‑reel moments. From dramatic finishes to breakout performances, our Pioneers gave fans a season to remember.

Boys Tennis

Providence Boys Tennis continues its steady climb under the guidance of Coach Stern. Each season shows real growth, and this year was no exception. To cap things off, Stephen Dutka and August Larsen battled their way into the Liberty League Tournament, pushing all the way to the Semifinals. Their run was a true reflection of the commitment and hard work poured into the program all season long. Congratulations to our standout tennis players for representing Providence with pride.

Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball enjoyed another strong and competitive season, earning a berth in the first round of the CIF Playoffs before falling to Coastal Christian. The team’s top pairing, Sarah Swinhart and Betsabe Osorio, qualified for the prestigious pairs tournament. While they didn’t advance beyond pool play, the duo showed impressive growth and chemistry as the season progressed. Hats off to the entire Beach Volleyball squad for their consistency, toughness, and never‑back‑down attitude.

Boys Golf

Resilience defined the Boys Golf season, and it culminated in some unforgettable moments. League Finals featured strong performances from Owen Boyd and Jake Koval, with freshman Boyd firing a 79—just three strokes shy of CIF qualification—and Koval posting an 86.

Then came the Mayor’s Cup, where drama took center stage. Fueled by Jake’s booming long game and Neal’s three clutch birdie putts, the duo carded a 2‑under 33, tying a Village Christian pairing for first. A sudden‑death putt‑off followed. With the crowd watching, Jake drained a nerve‑wracking 25‑foot putt, leaving it just five inches from the cup to secure the win. A storybook finish.

The victory earned Providence the 2026 Mayor’s Cup, presented by Burbank Councilman Chris Rizzotti, and the trophy now resides at DeBell—soon to be engraved with the Providence name. Jake was interviewed by Jim Riggio of myBurbank.com, with coverage forthcoming. A truly memorable day for Pioneer golf.

Track & Field

Track and Field continued its rebuilding journey with encouraging results. Every athlete on the roster recorded a personal record at league finals, a testament to both effort and improvement. Highlights included Marc Banta, Carolina Palma, and Maggie Clark Zavala, along with the boys 4x400 relay, all qualifying for CIF Prelims. The foundation is being laid for exciting seasons ahead.

Swim & Dive

Despite graduating several key contributors, Swim and Dive maintained its tradition of excellence. The program rebounded with two CIF qualifiers and multiple podium finishes at league.

  • The girls 200‑yard medley relay placed 3rd

  • Mary Indzhyan finished 2nd in the girls 200‑yard freestyle

  • Juni Matzdorff earned 2nd in the girls 100‑yard freestyle

  • Eritston Fischer took 2nd in the boys 100‑yard breaststroke

  • Jude Walsh captured a league title in the boys 500‑yard freestyle and advanced to CIF Finals, where he placed 4th overall in the boys 200‑yard freestyle

Another season, another deep pool of success.

Softball

The Providence Pioneers varsity softball team delivered a powerhouse 2025–26 season, finishing 18–4 (.818 winning percentage) behind dominant pitching and explosive offense. The Pioneers were nearly unbeatable at home (9–1) and flawless on neutral sites (4–0), outscoring opponents 191–55 overall.

The season opened in commanding fashion, including a 10–0 shutout of St. Paul and a gritty 1–0 road win at Burbank. From February 23 to March 12, Providence went on a tear, outscoring opponents 80–7 over five games, highlighted by wins of 17–0 over Triumph Charter and 19–4 at Reseda.

Their impressive resume earned them a CIF Division 5 playoff berth, where they’ll take on Viewpoint High School on Thursday, May 14 at 3:15pm (Olive Park). The Pioneers enter postseason play with momentum—and confidence.

Baseball

The Providence Pioneers varsity baseball team weathered a challenging 2025–26 season, showing flashes of offensive firepower, reliable pitching, and steady growth. Senior Kiran Kostecka was the heartbeat of the lineup, leading the team in batting average (.523), on‑base percentage (.553), slugging (.886), and home runs.

On the mound, junior Cade Mackenzie anchored the rotation with a strong 2.26 ERA, while freshman catcher Nathan Mendoza impressed defensively with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, signaling a bright future behind the plate.

The Pioneers finished 8–11 overall and 6–6 in league, earning a spot in the CIF Division 8 playoffs. They will host Nuview Bridge at 3:15pm at Schafer Field. Best of luck to the baseball team as they chase postseason success.
