Science Faculty & ASB Moderator

M.Ed, University of Massachusetts
B.S. Biology and Spanish with a Minor in Education, Duke University

Ms. Rebecca Poliner was born and raised in San Diego, California, attending La Jolla Country Day School. Scientific inquiry has always played a pivotal role in Ms. Poliner’s life as her mother, a seventh-grade science teacher at LJCDS, expanded the walls of her classroom to include their home, the San Diego tide pools, and all of their family vacations. With her two sisters, Ms. Poliner developed a lifelong love of learning and a call to service as she spent her summers on service trips throughout Latin America, working with the poor and vulnerable in Nicaragua, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

Ms. Poliner attended Duke University, and between NCAA championships, discovered her passion for cellular biology. Ms. Poliner worked in a cellular biology lab for two years before she discovered that her passion for the material was being restricted by the solitary nature of laboratory research. Inspired by her mother’s passion for science and ability to share that passion with others, Ms. Poliner travelled to Costa Rica with the support of DukeEngage (a program funded by the Gates Foundation) to teach English to local students. There, in the mountainous village of La Paz, Ms. Poliner discovered her passion for teaching. Ms. Poliner returned to Duke and became part of the Education Program. Her senior year of college consisted of student teaching AP and Honors Chemistry at a local public high school. Ms. Poliner graduated from Duke with a BS in Biology and Spanish with a minor in Education.

Ms. Poliner moved to Burbank and began teaching at Providence High School in 2012. She received her M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts while teaching at Providence High School. Ms. Poliner has enjoyed the challenges and opportunities of teaching Chemistry, Biology, and Nutrition. Ms. Poliner currently lives in Burbank with her husband, son and daughter, and two small dogs
