Pioneer Traditions

Providence High School supports an active co-curricular program full of opportunities for participation in areas of special interest to its students. The program is based on the conviction that student activities are part of a broad educational base which helps to create a well-rounded individual who will be successful in all phases of adult life.


 There are three school sponsored dances held throughout the year. The Back to School Dance, Winter Formal, and the Senior Prom. Dances, except for Senior Prom, are held on campus and are monitored by school faculty, staff and parent volunteers.

Pioneer Week

A true Providence tradition, Pioneer Week is a yearly event in the fall in which the classes compete against one another in a variety of athletic events. In order to promote class involvement, individuals are limited to participating in one event each.

Pioneer Weeks kicks off with classes competing against each other during lunchtime in Coed volleyball, girls and boys 3 on 3 basketball and girls and boys indoor super soccer. The week concludes with Pioneer Day.  Pioneer Day is an Olympic-type event in which classes compete in various athletic events at Johnny Carson Park, including running events like the 100 yard dash to the 4x400 relay race. At the conclusion of the running events, the classes then participate in a home run derby, egg toss and the main event girls and boys Tug-O-War.

Theme Night

Theme Night is the premier event of the year. Held in February, Theme Night is a school-wide event in which classes create and compete for spirit points through themed performances. Through careful, intricate planning, the students create a week’s worth of events in support of their theme.

Theme Night and the events leading up to the night are meant to increase class unity as well as enhance school spirit. The week’s events take months to prepare and just days to execute. The students work tirelessly to assure that the performances, banners, cheers and all of the details are created and finished to perfection.

The week’s events are judged by a panel of judges, comprised of faculty and staff members selected by ASB. These judges award points to every class based on their performance in each of the week’s categories. All of the points accumulated by the classes go towards the Spirit Point Competition that the students have every year. The class that reaches the set goal of spirit points is awarded a special spirit holiday.

After each grade level has selected a theme, certain students will begin going to work creating a banner that represents both the class and their respective theme.  The banners are revealed by a small group of students and are presented to the entire campus on the day prior to the Theme Day performance.  These banners act as flags representing each theme and are judged by our panel of judges.

The class cheer is simply meant to enhance the full enthusiasm for Theme Day on the larger scale.  Each class has a theme that is written by the students and performed the night of the performance.  The judges are told to look for clarity, originality, presentation, and organization.  Most of all, it is the enthusiasm and energy of the students that really makes the cheer.

Each grade level is judged on their performance in two separate sections.  The Entrance section is judged on creativity and the incorporation of their theme into the presentation of the class.   The second section is the dance section, which is judged based on the choreography, originality, and loyalty to the theme selected by the class. Each performance is restricted to the time limit of 20 minutes.

The costumes will be judged based on their loyalty to the theme, variety, quality, and originality.  Other criteria for the costumes portion have to do with the make-up, hairstyles, and accessories selected to accompany the costumes.

Like other categories, the props that are selected and used by each class will be judged by their own criteria.  Judges are instructed to look for quality, not quantity, creativity and originality and how well the props were used to enhance the student’s performance.
