Further Modifications to Senior Projects

We were genuinely moved by the concerns and requests for additional consideration regarding Senior Projects expressed during our meeting and various other exchanges. What we are hearing from you is that at this time, your senior projects are not providing the opportunity any of us (including you!) had hoped, even given the modifications and accommodations already in place. Our present and future are so unpredictable, and in some cases, even chaotic and traumatic. We appreciate hearing from so many of you; it helps us gain a better perspective when we cannot physically come together or check-in with you individually on campus. We want Providence to be a source of stability, support, and community for you. We refuse to allow COVID-19 to erode that.

Important: Please review the information below carefully as a member of Upper Administration will be reaching out to each of you for a call via Teams by the end of next week, May 8, to hear your decision and provide an additional opportunity for you to share any questions or concerns you may still have about Senior Projects.

Senior Project Research Paper: REQUIRED for all seniors.
Continue with and finish the research process and final paper for English class. If you need additional help modifying your topic or with the process itself, your English teacher will work with you. Communication is key.

Senior Project Presentation:  OPTIONAL  for all seniors.
There is no penalty for not completing this element. Instead of requiring every senior to present on their project, we are making it an option for those students who are already further along in the process, especially if you had time to connect with your mentor. Mrs. Rodriguez will provide a FlipGrid platform for those of you who wish to record your reflection on how what you learned through research and/or conversations with your mentor has shaped your ideas and plans for the future. This would be an incredible gift to be able to present to the mentors that have worked with you, as well as a meaningful way for you to share your learning with the larger PHS community. We are truly interested in hearing what you are excited and passionate about.

Senior Projects Product:  OPTIONAL  for all seniors.
There is no penalty for not completing this element. If you have already put in work researching your chosen field or creating a final product, we want to recognize and celebrate that effort. The product can be completely digital and simply reflect how you applied what you learned in your research and/or mentorship to your future plans.

Students, please discuss this email with your parents/guardians and decide what will benefit you the most. They are receiving this message as well. As stated earlier, either Mr. McLarty, Mrs. Castro, Ms. Martin, or Mr. Siy will be calling you next week via Teams to ensure we understand what each of you has decided and to provide an additional opportunity for us to personally address any questions or concerns you may still have about Senior Projects.

We remain committed to ensuring the best possible transition for all of you as you approach the end of your senior year and begin your time as Providence alumni. And we are looking forward to celebrating your accomplishments in some creative and exciting ways in the coming weeks. Your lives will take you many places, but Providence High School will ALWAYS be a place where you are valued and can call home.
